To promote the seafaring education and development of the sector in Latvia, for the third year in a row “Latvian Shipping Company” (LSC) in cooperation with “Vitol” Group announces the application for a scholarship competition for the future seafarers. The applications can be submitted until the 1st of August, 2017. The final year students of Latvia higher education institutions with good and excellent educational achievements, who have undergone and defended seafaring internship on one of the ships in the technical management of LSC subsidiary company SIA “LSC Shipmanagement” for at least four months are welcome to apply for the scholarship.

“Latvian Shipping Company” will award scholarships to six students, by financially supporting the stipendiary with EUR 300 each month throughout the academic year. The total scholarship fund has reached EUR 25,000.

“Our ship and shore crews are highly regarded and recognized internationally. One of its biggest proofs is this year’s addition of two modern and newly built tankers to the fleet under the supervision of SIA “LSC Shipmanagement”, making it 25 ships strong. Thus, it is increasingly challenging to maintain the high standards. With each year, we invest more and more in the training of employees and new professionals. The established scholarship program is an effective and direct way to reach students, in order to influence the development of the future seafaring industry and create its new leaders today,” emphasizes the LSC Chairman of the Board Roberts Kirkups, adding that the provision of highly professional services in accordance with the international standards promotes the development of the company.

Ilze Berzina, representative of LSC, points out that the preparedness of future employees for the specific seafaring work environment is a very important aspect for entering the labour market after graduation. “We see, that the requirement for the successfully defended internship has been justified. The stipendiaries of the previous years, after starting work in the “Latvian Shipping Company” right after graduation, successfully perform their job duties from day one, and appreciate the experience gained in the internship. The scholarship, in our view, is an important additional stimulus for the final year students to become outstanding graduates and eventually, bright workers of seafaring.”

In order to participate in the scholarship competition, applicants have to submit a filled in scholarship candidate evaluation form, transcript of records with a calculated average grade, CV and a motivation letter in English before the 1st of August. The application form and further information about the scholarship competition’s course are available on the LSC website, in the “Latvijas kuģniecības stipendija” section -
